Bad breath or halitosis is a common condition for almost everyone. Mostly, bad breath is caused by some odor producing bacteria in mouth and certain foods such as onion, garlic, etc. Poor oral hygiene is the other important cause of this problem. Bacteria accumulate between teeth and left over food when you fail to brush your teeth properly. These bacteria release sulfur compounds and this is the cause of bad smell in mouth. Foul smell originates from mouth, surface of tongue, below the surface of gum line and between teeth.
Major Causes of Bad Breath
The common cause of bad breath is bacteria. It also occurs due to the consumption of certain drinks and foods like orange juice, cheese, onion, and garlic and eating tobacco and smoking. Some of the other causes of bad breath are:
- Mouth sores,
- Sinus problems,
- Antihistamines and other medicines,
- Skipping breakfast,
- Protein rich foods,
- Serious illness like syphilis, tuberculosis or cancer,
- Stomach problems,
- Significant talking,
- Tooth infections, etc.
Home Remedies for Bad Breath
You can cure bad breath by adopting some home remedies. Chewing mint leaves is one of the simplest home remedies for bad breath. It is beneficial for making your breath fresh very soon. You can also cure this problem by brushing your teeth after every meal.
Apple cider vinegar is a highly effective mouthwash for getting long lasting relief from bad breath. You can prepare this mouthwash by diluting half tablespoon vinegar in to a glass of water. Gargle this solution in your mouth for 10 seconds.
You can also cure bad breath by using baking soda. It has the ability to change pH level in your mouth. It suppresses the activities of odor causing bacteria. You can put some baking soda in the brush while brushing your teeth. If the bad breath is due to dry mouth, you can cure it by eating citrus fruits, such as grapes, lemon, orange, etc. These fruits are rich sources of citric acid and they help to improve your breath
Tea made from fenugreek seeds is the other natural remedy for bad breath. You can also chew a clove after meals for dealing with this problem. Gargling a glass of lemon water is very effective. You can alleviate foul smell from your mouth if you drink pineapple juice. Apples have the ability to purify mouth. So eating apples every day is the good remedy for curing bad breath.
Cardamon is a good breath freshner. So you can prevent foul smell by chewing cardamon seed. You should avoid some mouthwashes, which contain alcohol and dyes. These may provide you temporary relief from bad breath. But these are not useful for getting long lasting results.
You should consume foods that contain zinc, which is helpful for checking the presence of anaerobic bacteria in mouth. You can also rinse your mouth with hydrogen peroxide before brushing. Usage of a tongue cleaner, peroxil, hydrogen peroxide, etc are also highly beneficial. Keeping stomach clean has greater role in preventing bad breath. This can be attained by taking two spoons of castor oil. Brushing two times in a day is highly recommended. Consumption of plenty of fluids, such as soup, water, watery fruits and vegetables, etc is also effective. However, you should avoid certain foods such as alcohol, coffee, sugar, spicy or fried foods, etc. The intake of these foods may aggravate the problem.
